This particular creature has also been seen using the names silk hat, cylinder hat, chimney pot hat, stove pipe hat, topper, Chapeau Claque, high hat, party hat, wellington, mad hatter hat, coachman so on and so forth. It's first appearance was at the end of the 18th century and gave it plenty of time to make social rounds and gather many, many names. The Top Hat is tall, flat-topped and has been seen in beaver felt, rabbit felt , beaver/seal cloth, silk cloth, and grosgrain silk. This hat started in the upper class as a riding, hunting and formal event hat. It has since then worked through the ranks of the military, politicos, and eventually it became popular among varying social classes. The Top Hat is widely known as a sign of authority or decor for special events.
